How should I prepare my dog before moving day?
When getting your dog ready for the big day, don’t leave all the to-dos for the last minute. Plan ahead; get started as soon as possible. Before you move, make sure you:
- Check the laws. Will you need a fence? What are the leash laws? Cover all your bases to make sure your new neighborhood is ready to welcome your dog.
- Make sure your dog has a microchip and identification. Have an ID tag on your pet’s collar and have your veterinarian microchip the dog for permanent identification. If your dog gets out of your new home, there’s a good chance he’ll get lost. Make sure you take all the precautions to keep your dog safe.
- Crate train your dog. If your dog will be spending time in a crate during the drive to your new home, it’s important to make sure they’re comfortable in one by the time the big day rolls around.
How do we help our dog adjust to our new home?
Dogs are usually content as long as their social group and daily routine are consistent. That’s why it’s important to intentionally provide a comforting situation for your furry friend at your new home. Follow these tips to make the transition easier for your pooch:
- Create familiarity. Try your best to stick to their previous feeding and walking schedules. And, if you can, arrange the dog bed or crate in a similar way to your old house.
- Make it fun. Get your dog a new chew toy or fill a Kong with peanut butter. This will start their time out in your new home on the right foot—or paw, rather.
- Keep the old stuff. One or two new toys or treats are a fun idea, but make sure you keep some of their favorites, too. Because dogs love routine and familiarity, it’s important to keep some of the belongings that remind them of home. Don’t buy them a new dog bed or crate, for example.
- Bring them to different areas of the neighborhood when you take them out for a walk. This will help them slowly adjust to their new surroundings. Plus, it’ll allow you to get to know the neighbors and their dogs as well!
- Give them attention. As a dog owner, this is probably second nature to you. While your dog adjusts to the new house, there’s a good chance they’ll be craving your attention… even more than usual.
- Get on their level. Something that helps dogs feel at home is familiar smells. Spread those smells around faster by spending time on the floor with your dog.
How long will it take my dog to adjust to a move?
Every pooch is different, but on average it should only take a few days for dogs to relax in a new environment. If you follow the tips above, you’ll see your four-legged friends acting like themselves again in no time.
